Character Sketch of Muni’s Wife in a Horse and Two Goats

Introduction
In the story, Muni’s wife has been presented as a typical Indian woman who, in spite of suffering from utter poverty, was wholeheartedly dedicated to the household duties and responsibilities. In the story, she has been introduced in her kitchen where she prepared and packed food for her husband. She had spent some sixty years with Muni (neither of them was sure about their ages), through prosperity and poverty.

Her Being Tired of Her Husband
It is evident in the story that Muni’s wife had grown tired of him, especially after being married to him for so long. She often scolded him when complained. This is reiterated in the line, His Wife said, Tou are getting no sauce today, nor anything else. Fast till the evening, It’ll do you good. Take the goats and be gone now’, she cried and added, ‘Don’t come back until the sun is down.’ This shows that she was exasperated with him and wished him to be out of the house so she could be alone.

Her Having A Soft Corner for Her Husband
Although she had grown indifferent towards Muni as she was treated by him cruelly, she had some tender and affectionate feelings for him. Muni used to thrash her occasionally earlier, but now as he was idle and had nothing to do for the house, she had taken up the household responsibilities on her shoulder and this had made her stern towards him. Now she had the upper hand in the family disputes. As she was tender to some extent, she was willing to satisfy her husband’s craving to chew the drumstick out of sause. So, she asked him to bring some necessary ingredients from the shop.

Hardworking and Honest
She was a hardworking woman whom poverty had not worn down. She tried to earn enough by taking up occasional jobs in the Big House. In spite of being poor, she did not leave the path of honesty. She was so honest that she did not show any happiness when Muni brought to her one hundred rupees from the American. Muni tried to explain to her what happened to him, but she was not convinced of him. She accused him of stealing it.
