Character Sketch of Margot in All Summer in a Day

Introduction
Margot is the protagonist of the story ‘All Summer in A Day. She has been presented as a frail girl. She has come from the Earth five years back and she is now nine as her classmates. On the planet Venus, she finds herself unable to adapt to the conditions of Venus where it had been remaining continuously for seven years, without the appearance of the sun. She likes to live in a secluded state.

She does not like the company of other children as she thinks that they, without having knowledge about the sun, are orthodox. She feels highly dejected in the glum and gray atmosphere of the planet Venus. As she comes from the Earth to live on the planet Venus, she is able to preserve the memories of the sun. Whenever she feels sad she recalls her life on the Earth where the sun greets with its golden rays.

The Impact of the Atmosphere of Venus on her Physical Appearance and Mental Strength
The constant rain on planet Venus makes an intense impact on her physical appearance. It seems as if the rain has washed out the red colour from her face, the blue colour of her eyes, and the golden colour of her hair. She looks like a faded, whitened photograph from an old album.

She looks pale and sick like a ghost. The rain hour also affected her mental strength as well. She has drowned in gloominess. She likes to remain aloof from other children. She shows no interest to interact with, other children. It seems as if she had grown entirely indifferent towards the world which is around her. She has lost interest in games and other activities.

Her Being A Round and Static Character
Margot is a round character because the narrator describes her background and appearance in depth. Her feelings are expressed deeply too, even though the characters in the story may not think so. Margot is also a static character because from beginning to end she remains the same. She does not bring any change in her.

Her Clinging to the Memories of the sun and Her Longing to See the sun
As Margot has lived in Ohio until she was five she still has many memories of the sun and the sun continues to fascinate her. She often talks about the sun to her classmates. While remembering the sun she says:

‘It is like a penny.’
‘It’s like a fire in the stove.’

She refuses to participate in any classroom activity that does not include the sun. When she comes to know that the scientists have predicted the sun’s appearance for a short period, she extremely longs to see the sun and eagerly waits for its appearance. When other children tease her by saying that the scientists are wrong while predicting but she has a firm belief in the prediction made by the scientists. She looks out of the window, waiting silently for the rain to stop and the sun to come out.

Her Being Different from Other Children
Margot is different from the rest of her classmates as she is the only one who knows about the sun and sunshine. She has been under the sun when she was on Earth and now on Venus, she suffers from a lack of it. She is like the weird person in the class and does not fit in with other children. The writer shows this by saying:

‘Margot stood apart from them, from these children who could never remember a time when there wasn’t rain and rain and rain.’

Her Being Treated Indifferently by Her Classmates
As she keeps herself far from other students and does not mix up with them, they think her a different creature. Hence they treat her indifferently. Moreover, her being silent and not opposing them encourage them to mistreat her. It seems that because of her belonging to the Earth, she is smarter than her classmates.

Her Being Victim of Jealousy
Margot is always described as being isolated from other children. They all are wary of her and jealous of the fact that she has come from the earth and she has experienced the sun and also the fact that Margot may again go back to earth to experience sunshine. The jealousy of classmates makes them bully her and on the day when the sun is supposed to come out, she is locked in the closet by her classmates.
