Theme of the Poem Nine Gold Medals
The poem brings out the ideas of compassion, teamwork and sportsman-ship through the exemplary behaviour of the athlete. In the poem, the poet shows how human values in a sportsman are as important as the spirit of competition. Caring and sharing is much more important than winning or losing. Sports is not only about winning medals but also about learning the values of empathy and cooperation.
The poem brings out a situation where the contestants suppress their dream and strong desire to win and come forward to help their fellow contestant who had fallen down on the running track. They empathised with him. Coming together as a group, the contestants stood by each other and walked together to the finishing line and all of them won a gold medal. Although the other contestants at this point of time could have continued running for the medal, yet they pulled up on their heels to help the young boy to stand up. Indeed, it was an exemplary scene that displayed spirit of sportsmanship.
