Theme of the Poem Abou Ben Adhem

In the poem, the poet wants to impress upon us the importance of kindness and love to our fellow beings. He says that it is through the love of fellow men that we can get the blessings of God’s love. In the poem, the poet relates an event in the life of Abou Ben Adhem as an example. Abou was a pious man. He was the leader of a tribe. He was loving and gentle to his people.

He was selfless and did good to everyone. He had a meeting with an angel who was writing the names of those who loved God. Abou’s name was not in it. Abou requested the angel to write his name as one who loved his fellowmen. The angel did so and vanished. The next night the angel came again into his room and showed him the names of those who had been blessed by God’s love. Abou’s name was at the top of the list.

In this way, the poem shows that if we want to get God’s love, we should^ love our fellow beings. We all know that all the holy books teach us one single message that is to love one another, to love humanity and mankind. In fact real and true worship of God is to love mankind created by God. If we love, serve and help humanity, God will be happy and will make the showers of his love and blessings upon us. Those who have the spirits of love, brotherhood, neighbourhood and humanity, find themselves very close to God. Those who show themselves as a holy and religious persons and claim to be great devotee of God, but avoid and dislike their fellow beings, are shunned by God.

Nothing can be gained by wandering different religious places unless you love, serve and help your fellow beings. God does not accept the prayers of those who despise their fellow beings.
